This site exists to inform everyone about the efforts being made to deliver a hyperfast broadband service to various parishes in Norfolk and Suffolk, This site is specific to the project for Tibenham.
The project will follow the model used by B4RN, there is a further website B4SN for the other efforts in the south norfolk area.
This is an amazing service using a professionally designed fibre optic network. Fibre optics are capable of significantly higher speeds than copper cables. Most people are currently connected via the existing (possibly poor quality) phone lines back to the nearest street cabinet which significantly restricts the speeds available. The speed drops off rapidly as distance increases. Fibre optic networks can travel considerable distances with little performance loss.
The service B4RN offer is a FTTP product. (Fibre to the Premises), this eliminates the copper wire from the connection.
B4RN is registered as a non-profit community benefit society, run by a dedicated local team with the support of landowners and volunteers.
The service offered is a true Gigabit speed, not an upto speed. 1000Mb is 20 times faster than a 50Mb ADSL connection. B4RN offer a symetric connection, in other words both upload and download speed are 1Gb (1000Mb) unlike most providers who artificially cap the upload speed to increase profits.
Amongst the future changes which will further increase demand for high speed networking is the pending switch off of the PSTN (old telephone) system. The analogue phone system is due to be switch off in 2025 (see BT PSTN Switch off), after this date all phone user will require a digital connection using VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol). This will make a fast and reliable internet connection essential.
